I have a package of Morningn Glory seeds and a yard that has no flowers. Part of my house in the front is stone. In the mornings to about 2pm, the area against the stone is in shade. From that point on to sunset, it is in full sun. If I placed a something against the stone for them to climb on, would this be a good location considering the sun?
Morning Glories?
that is a perfect location for them! they close up their blooms in bright sunlight, so having them in shade til 2 oclock will mean that they will bloom longer each day.
I use black plastic-coated wire for my vines to grow on. The wire is invisible from a distance. You need to wrap the vines around the wires at first til they take off on their own. I drill a small hole in a wooden stake, then pound the stake into the ground and tie the wire to it thru the hole. then allow at least 8 feet of wire for the morning glories and attach the other end of the wire to the wall using concrete anchors. Or, you could take it all the way to the eavestrough and attach it there.
having one wire every 18" is enough, if the glories are planted 6 inches apart. keep the wires about 10" out from the wall at the soil level to allow for air circulation.
Reply:I had some come up my fence (wild) last year on the north side of my house. They receive morning sun and early afternoon sun. They were so beautiful that I planted some seeds a couple of months ago but my husband sprayed them with weed killer (grrr). I don't think the time of day matters that much as long as they are getting a few hours of sun each day. From 2 to sunset should be fine. I would put a trellis out for them to climb.
Reply:morning glories are very hearty and will probably climb up the stone but to be safe a trellis will not hurt. as far as sun goes you do not need a whole lot of morning sun. Morning glories also have a reputation for taking over so i wouldn't plant much else in that area. they are beautiful from early spring to early fall.
