Can anyone name my fragrant plant?

I've recently found some new plants in our yard and I'd really like to identify them. They look a whole lot like Queen Anne's Lace or poison hemlock. I mean the leaves because they haven't flowered yet. They are in a flat sunny part of our yard. They weren't planted so I guess they're a weed or wildflower of some sort. We live in southern Indiana.

My main interest in them is the wonderful smell the leaves emit when bruised or crushed. Can't really describe it but it's better than many flowers I've smelled.

Anyway, hope I haven't been going about sniffing a handful of hemlock all day!

Can anyone name my fragrant plant?
Queen Anne's Lace is a member of the carrot family, and there are a number of herbs in that family as well, dill being one of the most prominent. I would be careful even just handling it until you find out for sure what it is. I wound up with a chemical burn from the herb Rue. Guess where it gets it's name?! I agree with the first poster - that's what your local extension agent is for.
Reply:I would definitely check with your local County Extension office to be sure it is not hemlock or any other poisonous thing. You may have to cut a piece of stem off and take it to them, but it's worth it if turns out to be an undesireable! Does it by chance smell like carrot?
Reply:it sounds like Feverfew or maybe Yarrow.

What was your favorite part in Hamlet?

It's one of my favorite plays ever. I like the part where Ophelia goes insane and starts handing out flowers. I think about it a lot.

What was your favorite part in Hamlet?
"This above all: to thine own self be true". - (Act I, Scene III).
Reply:I too enjoy the scene in which Ophelia starts giving away flowers (especially because the flowers are all symbolic), but my favorite part is probably the very end, because the resolution is so dramatic, and because I love Horatio's "Goodnight, sweet prince" line and the idea of Fortinbras taking over, especially because of the parallels between Hamlet, Laertes and Fortinbras.

How Can I Learn To Reconnect With My Perceptions?

When I was a child I experienced a lot of horrible trauma. Part of the way that I coped and survived was by disconnecting myself from my body.

I learnt to take my mind and all that is my essence away. I'd drift far away so I wouldn't have to experience what was happening to me.

This is a part of childhood that my subconscious mind holds on to and projects into my present life. A defense reaction that once was my ally, now a nemesis of sorts. My interactions with people and my environment are susquently hindered as my default position always seems to be set on the urgent "Vacate You Body Now".

I feel like I'm stuck here and I'd like to grow past it. I no longer need this tool from my childhood but my brain is so paranoid that I'm still under threat it won't let me rest.

Any advice you could lend would be greatly appreciated. Be Nice :) I'm a magic flower trying to grow. Water me with goodness.

How Can I Learn To Reconnect With My Perceptions?
Well, I think you may have to go through the "wall of fire". What I mean is, yes, I completely understand what you're saying. It's like having a suit of armor, that served you well when you were under attack, but...."uh, gee, this thing is getting a little heavy now....I can't seem to move the way I want to....." etc. You (your adult conscious mind) are going to have to "revisit" some of the painful areas, in order to unify yourself once again. You can talk to yourself, as the Adult, as in "You are safe now, and I will protect you. You will never have to go through THAT again."

I think of it like "defrosting". When someone has been in the snow for a long time, on the verge of dying, it is painful for them to get up and get the blood flowing. You're going to have to do something like that, to reconnect. It may hurt, but remind yourself how strong you really are. It will help if you make a commitment to yourself, that you deserve to live the rest of your life, being able to feel the full range of emotions that humans are capable of -- and the most powerful force, is Love. Take small steps at first. Get "reacquainted" with what you are actually feeling. It can take some time -- what at first seems like "anger" becomes instead "hurt", "disappointed", "frustrated" etc. Be patient with yourself, but also push yourself to do things that may seem very uncomfortable right now.

Be brave, and keep safe.

You WILL get through this. You are a kind and compassionate person; that will be your strength.
Reply:well, i think you really need to talk to someone about the things that happened to you, a counsler or therapist..if your already doing that, the second best thing i think is writing in a journal..but it seems like you really need someone to talk to and maybe even a medication until you can accept some of the things that happened to you.
Reply:No offense but 96% of the world population has the same problem. They got too much money and not enough love. They had no money and ate cereal twice a day. They were sexually abused by relatives or whoever. They were neglected and beat. The list goes on and on. When I talk about my childhood, I laugh although it was tough. My childhood was so tough that shrinks do not believe a person could go through so much, I survived and do not dwell on the past. My daily Bible readings have had such an impact that I see today. Look at the trees, birds, and everything around you. Every time you start feeling sad, let yourself do so for 15 min. then start looking at the beauty around you; you may wish to think of all of those who are going through touchier and realize how thankful you should be. A shrink may find a chemical imbalance. You may want to start with a shrink.
Reply:Yes, I have heard of this and experienced too this as a child. There is a medical term for it. As a child, I would tell my mother during very stressful times, "I feel like I am not really here." I can even remember my gums getting numb. Sounds weird, I know.

You need to see a neuro phsychologist for some answers. Best of luck you.

What to wear with a brown and turquise dress - Help!?

I am going to a wedding and have bought a lovely dress but have no idea what shoes, jewellery and jacket/cardigan to wear with it.... The dress is strapless, mid to dark brown with turquiose flowers round the embroidered round the lower part of the skirt and is mid calf length. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

What to wear with a brown and turquise dress - Help!?
Some pretty brown, high-heel sandals. A simple wrap in either color. And turquoise and/or gold jewelry. Don't worry about being too matchy-matchy; that's too 1980's. Pick classic accessories that will work with several outfits you already own.
Reply:u can follow simple rule of elegance - do not have on more than three colours at a time.

so this means that you can have shoes and a clutch in another colour and it will still work. I would say stay away from turquoise because it has so many shades it may be difficult to find right stuff. Go for a kitten heal shoes as they go very well with the mid-calf length and a small bag or a clutch which has long strap - so it is not in your hands the whole time. Colour - beige, cream and it would be nice if the clutch or small bag has some embroidery on it. if your skin-tone is pale than go for a brown pashmina and if you have a tan or darker skin than definitely go for cream or beige pashmina.

consider a hat. strapless dress means a lovely neckless and nothing else as far as jewelry goes. If you can find one with pieces of turqoise stone than you have a real winner otherwise go for 'real' piece that you have not plasticky etc as it will draw attention so it is better to have a real thing even if it is a simple chain.

hope this helps
Reply:turquise accessories and brown shoes and shawl
Reply:I would try to bring out the turquiose, maybe a shawl, a great bangle bracelet ... I like an open neck with a strapless, so I'd avoid a necklace. for shoes, you can either do brown or turquoise, but I'd go with brown sandals and let your few accessories (shawl, bangle, the embroidery) really pop.
Reply:any to match
Reply:Do you need a jacket or a cardigan with the dress? Why not a small bolero with long sleeves if necessary.....turquoise sandals, turquoise beaded bag and a light gold necklace with tiny turquoise crystals, Have fun....I love dressing up for weddings!!!!
Reply:Silver shoes and jewels.
Reply:Accessorise in turquoise, that includes shoes, bag and jewelry. Wear fairly high, strappy sandals-they will accentuate the shape of you legs and make you calfs look slimmer. Wear a turquoise bolero so that it is not too close to the detail on the dress. Try keep the jewelry simple and make sure the colour of your bag matches the colour of your shoes well. Enjoy the wedding!
Reply:Brown or silver strap sandals and minimal turquoise jewelry
Reply:I would go with silver accessories. Perhaps a chunky multi strand toursade necklace and bracelet with drop earrings. Just my opinion without seeing the complete outfit.
Reply:Brown shoes,brown jacket(elegant),turquoise jewelry.That's really simple.
Reply:Having done a fashion design course at college, I would normally never consider mixing brown and turquoise on an item in any respect; Brown %26amp; Turquoise do not normally go together... However, In the brown region, you want to be aiming for colors in the green or red spectrum and for turquoise, complementing colors are Yellow, pale green, and darker blues.

As for accessories, I cannot really advise you, since I was purely designing clothes, not matchouts to go with them!
Reply:Wear a fitted jacket in turquiose and strappy high heel sandals (velvet look would be good) in brown/beige. You can get great chunky jewellery in turquoise. But it depends on the pattern of the flowers. If the flowers are large print go for the chunky variety, a abstract shape would be good or a disc circle with side stones around the neckline. If the flowerprint is smaller go for a more subtle turquiose peice either costume or really with small turquoise stones such as marquiseque or aqua crystals.(QVC do some good stuff) A central stone peice is essential with stapless dresses or your neck will look stumpy. Good luck and happy shopping.
Reply:Well for starters on the shoes how about this one

or

http://www.zappos.com/n/p/dp/16835740/c/...

then I would find a simple white shawl or thin sweater to wear over the top if too cool out.

Maybe a nice gold necklace and anklet.
Reply:I would go for turquise shoes and cardi.
Reply:wear brown hig heals, and a brown jacket maybe? and turquoise jewlery
Reply:I would try brown shoes, probably strappy. (since the dress is srapless, show off most of your foot. No closed toe shoes.) You might luck up and find some with one turquoise strap. (I have a pair like that.) Wear a simple turquoise necklace, bracelet and earrings, maybe a small tear drop pair.. (Don't over do it with the jewlery!!!!!) A nice brown wrap or shrug (short jacket) would go nice. No full jacket though. And wear your hair up, show your shoulders when you take your wrap off.

Have a nice time!!
Reply:Black heels and brushed or antiqued gold earrings and necklace that are simple and tasteful, or a necklace that has a smoky topaz or turquoise cluster hanging from a circlet. Stick to gold because it's more dressy. If you can't find a turquoise crocheted sweater or wrap to match the flowers on your dress, wear that or stick to black.
Reply:Jean jacket...brown shoes....no black purse or shoes...i don't know about jewelry. Something simple %26amp; gold. Like a gold necklace. Nothing cheesy. The dress sounds pretty enough to draw attention to it...so don't overdo the jewelry.
Reply:shoes i would try to match w/ the brown of the dress-probably open toe-jewelry i would go w/ turqouise-keep the jewelry simple-b/c the dress sounds beautiful and you dont want to take away from that-maybe wear your hair up if you can-have fun
Reply:I think gold high heeled shoes, a gold clutch bag and maybe a thin gold belt too!

The dress sounds gorgeous!
Reply:Brown shoes and wrap, turquoise jewelry.
Reply:I would say.. brown or tan shoes, turquiose cardigan or wrap, and silver jewlery
Reply:off set the dress with the colors in it everything from make up to earrings etc.
Reply:Wear silver strappy sandals, silver jewellery and a turquoise pasmina.
Reply:less is more sounds as if the dress already has its own attractions so go strappy with some open toe heel and try cat eye or or earth jewerly or you can really play it up sliver and turquiose or leather .
Reply:What id do is wear a turquoise shrug, turquoise shoes and turquoise clutch bag - and then very minimalistic silver jewelry

Spring Bulbs Question?

After our spring bulbs bloom I understand that you shouldn't cut the stems off. You can cut the dead flower bloom part off. But it is still taking in energy for next season. With that being said, when is it a safe time to take your bulbs out (tulips, daffodills, %26amp; bluebells) to see if they have separated to give you more flowers for next year?

This is not something that you're supposed to do every year as I understand it. There is a misnomer that you can just leave your bulbs in the ground and they'll do just fine, however if you do dig them up after it's safe (late summer?) then you can double the amount of bulbs to plant for the fall.

Can anyone add anything to that? And when can you dig up the bulbs (time of year) to see if they've given you baby bulbs/multiplied?

Spring Bulbs Question?
Really, the only reason we dig up bulbs is to divide the clump, down here in the South. (Zone 8b) Special protection, such as digging and bringing the fleshy storage structure into a warmer area for storage through the winter months is required in colder climates. This is done before the first frost, after the foliage has completely died back and yellowed.

Dig the bulbs using a digging tool of your choice, and that is comfortable with your style. I use the garden flat faced digging fork, that will get under the bulbs and lift them out of the ground without bruising them. Be careful to allow a little space between where the foliage is and the bulb so that you will not accidentally split the bulbs with the tool.

I guess the key is that you want the bulb to take in all the sunshine it can, which is done through the leaves, during the growing season. That's what makes the bulb bigger, or in the case of most, helps it to propagate "babies". Don't dig 'em till the leaves are brown and withered up.

Reply:Intelligence is like a kind of perception. You can perceive and understand things before others can at times.

So imagine if you could see what was happening a thousand miles away. Would your life necessarily be easy? Though you might see many beautiful things you never could before, you would also be able to see many ugly ones you never could either.

To make matters worse, the more you see that others cannot, the less people you have who can understand and sympathize you - to reach a pinnacle is to truly be alone.

So is life easy if you are smart? In some ways it becomes easier, and in some ways it becomes harder. It's a trade.

You'll note, however, that even Charlie wanted to remain intelligent and remain alive. Many dumb people wish to be smart, but few smart people wish to be dumb. If it is a trade, it would seem that most find it to be a profitable one, overall.

I highly recommend Born on a Blue Day by Daniel Tammet, The Speed of Dark by Elizabeth Moon, and The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-time by Mark Haddon. Each of these books deals with Autism, a crippling brain syndrome. Born on a Blue Day is Daniel Tammet's autobiography. He was an autistic savant, but he came out of it. His book describes the world as he saw it before and how he sees it now. The Speed of Dark was a fantastic book which follows the story of a high-functioning Autistic man from his normal life to life after being "cured" of his Autism. The Curious Incident... is about a young man who has Asperger's Syndrome/high functioning Autism who finds a neighbor's dog murdered.

If you are interested, you can watch Mercury Rising with Bruce Willis and Rain Man with Dustin Hoffman and Tom Cruise. Mercury Rising involves a young boy with autism and Rain Man is based on the true story of the experiences of an autistic man and his brother.

What is this flower shaped skin rash?

ok so maybe six times a year since my senior yr of high school (i'm a junior in college now), i've broken out really quickly with itchy raised white skin that doesnt stop itching..it could take a half an hour to go away or like last night it lasted until this morning while i was sleeping..i get it all over - around my waist, my forearms, even on my toes and the bottoms of my feet. the weirdest part is that this morning i noticed on my forearm that the raised white lines looking like legit flowers! three of them and then a perfect cloud like shape around the flowers. i took a picture..on other parts of my body, its just curvy lines..wish i could post it. what could this be and whats the reason for the pattern?

What is this flower shaped skin rash?
Could be hives, shingles, who knows. Both can be brought on by stress or an allergy to something. Maybe a trip to the doctor is in order. Hope you feel better
Reply:Looks like an allergy reaction at first sight. Could you .determine that the outbreaks come after eating something like: sea food, strawberries, peanuts, or being exposed to hay or pollen, or light? (This list is by no means limitative). Perhaps an allergy test is needed. Another possibility could be a slight food intoxication but this would be accompanied from other serious symptoms.

Alright. So I have this antique flower pot. It's glass... It's yellow. It has a flower type design around the rim and in triangles that point towards the base. Their are also smooth triangles that point toward the rim. Um... The flowers aren't painted on they are part of the pot (brain crampage)... Um. I'm just wondering about it. I'm not looking to see really. I'd just like some info. I cant find any manufacture's name on it. I"m assuming it came from montana, because it was purchased an antique shop in montana. Um... It's about four inches tall and 3'4 inches wide... Anything? Sorry I dont have a picture right now. :(

    Science flowers questions-please answer?

I need the questions to be answered please for extra credit please?

-Describe the role that each flower part plays in the process of pollination.

-How could a gardener or scientist, such as Mendel, pollinate a flower.

-Explain what parts of the flower grow into the fruit adn seeds and how these parts grow into the fruit and seeds.

-Explain how the fruit grows, by explaining the process of mitosis and what results when a cell undergoes mitosis.

    Science flowers questions-please answer?
The carpel/pistil is the female part. The stamens around the pistil are the male parts and the pollen is taken from the end of the stamens called the anther and deposited onto the pistil to enter the ovary.

Mendel could use a paintbrush to brush some pollen onto the carpel/pistil of the flower.

The ovary of the flower grows into the wall of the fruit and the ovules have eggs in them that develop into seeds. They grow by mitosis into fruit and seeds.

Mitosis is a complicated process including prophase, metaphase, anaphase, and telophase. When a cell undergoes mitotic divisions, it is made larger in size.

This is just basic information for the last two questions. The first two have pretty much summed all the answers up.

PROANTHOCYANIDIN is a compound with multiple benefits worth calling it Vitamin P. Why is it not sequenced?

PROANTHOCYANIDIN(PA) IS a flavoniod found in most colored plant parts. They are found in flowers, brown sweet potatos, black soybean, ground nuts, in leaves and fruits. When eaten they take away active radicals from our body which otherwise add up to carcinogenic effect inside body.

Sequencing involves studying the trait at genetic level. It helps to find the minute differences in the product that are otherwise unnoticable to the naked eyes. The sequence of a trait of one organism can be used to compare the traits in the other.

Sequencing is necessary, Proanthocyanidin is important to heath and antiaging. But i am unable to find the sequence for PA. If there are any scientists looking this post and working with PA sequencs, please help me out.

Plant scientists will understand it well.

I am a retired plant scientist and not up to snuff on the latest literature, but I would guess this work is being done. Perhaps more in Europe than in the USA. If you have a real interest in this work a thorough search of scientific research might be in order.

Sounds like I would buy a bottle.

Any tips for Bird of Paradise?

I got a small one from a friend and planted it -- a couple of months later, it is still alive but that's about all that can be said for it! It has no new growth and doesn't look healthy. I added some bone meal to the soil and it gets water based fertilizer regularly. We've had plenty of rain. It gets part sun, part shade. I live in Central Florida. How can I encourage it to grow and, even, perhaps, flower?

Any tips for Bird of Paradise?
The success or failure of a planting often depends on whether the plants receive adequate moisture. Liberal watering during the growing season will encourage plants to grow more profusely and ensure a large crop of flowers during the blooming season.

To aid in proper watering, construct a saucer-like basin around the plant from the extra backfill soil. This will hold water until it drains down to the plant's roots. Both a soggy soil with poor drainage and insufficient watering will cause leaves to yellow and eventually die. During the winter months, plants should be watered only when the soil next to the plants is fairly dry.

Mulch placed around the base of the plants will help conserve moisture, stabilize root temperature, and reduce weed infestations. Keep a 2- to 3-inch circular area around the stem of plants free of mulch. Mulches against the stems of plants may increase the chance of stem rot.

Common organic mulch materials include leaves, pine needles, bark, wood chips, sawdust and bagasse (a sugar cane by-product). Inorganic materials like glass wool, gravel and crushed stone also are suitable. Peat should not be used because once dry it is very difficult to wet and may restrict water movement into the soil.

Fertilization For best growth and flowering, bird-of-paradise requires fertilization. Slow-release fertilizers, such as sewage sludge and bloodmeal, or an inorganic complete fertilizer such as 12-4-8, can be used. Apply slow-release fertilizers at a rate of three to five pounds per 100 square feet of bed area and 12-4-8 at the rate of one pound per 100 square feet of bed area. Spread fertilizer around plants every three months during the growing season. Addition of minor elements is recommended.

At least once a year, preferably during summer, remove dead leaves and old flower stalks to prevent fungal organisms from building up on dead tissue.

How wide should the border be?

As part of a landscaping project, you put in a flower bed measuring 20 feet by 30 feet. To finish off the project, you are putting in a uniform border of pine bark around the outside of the rectangular garden. You have enough bark to cover 336 square feet. How wide should the border be?

How wide should the border be?
    3 feet.

Assume the width of the border is x.

You have 100 linear feet (2*20+2*30) that has width = x, plus 4 corner squares each with dimensions x*x = x^2

    4x^2 + 100x = 336

    4(x^2 + 25x - 84) = 0

    4(x-3)(x+28) = 0

    x = 3 or -28, and we reject -28.

adding a uniform area will result in an area of (20 + x)(30 + x)

    Total area is 600 + 336 = 936

    936 = (20 + x)(30 + x)

    936 = 600 +50x + x^2

    0 = x^2 +50x - 336

    0 = (x - 6)(x + 56)

    x = 6, -56

You cannot have a negative border, so the answer is a border of 6 ft to obtain a 26 by 36 area.
Reply:Use the perimeter of the flower bed (=20+20+30+30=100ft).

Divide the perimeter into the square footage of the bark you have available.

    336/100 = 3.36 ft wide.

Do you know what kind of bug this is?

I am in Ohio and have never seen this bug in my flower garden before. They are small, with no wings, mostly black and some orange/red stripes on the lower part of the body. They are about a centimeter big and all over of the leaves of my rose of sharon.

It may be box elder bug, but maybe not since you said it's wingless.

  • Flower girl...?

I have been thinking about asking my matron of hours little sister to be my flower girl... I didnt ask her at the start cos i didnbt know if my budget would stretch to it and i didnt want to ask then disappoint her.

Shes a young and small 7 yr old.

The parts i need help on are...

    1) cheap dresses (UK) that go with either champagne/ivory

    2) what for her to carry?

Dont want her to have same flowers as me or bridesmaids...

Dont like the wicker baskets and cant afford the satin ones unless i made one myself... Not allowed to drop petals anyway so it would just have to have flowers in it

Like the flower balls... but think its beyond my budget :o(

Was thinking of her blowing bubbles as she walked down..

Do you think she would be able to do that and walk at same time? lol

    Cant do candles...

Can you think of anything else?

My step son to be is 3 and he is carrying a teddy that has a jewelery box attatched with the rings in.

    Thanks

    Flower girl...?
She could carry lots of fun things. You've got a teddy bear. She could carry one of those teddy bears as well. Or a doll.

A floral wreath like those that go in your hair.

    A small pocketbook

    a bible

    a family heirloom

a butterfly in a jar if you are doing a butterfly release

a large paper flower like they have at carnivals

she could carry a bowl full of flowers and not have to throw them. When she gets to the alter, she puts the flowers on the alter.

What flowers are in your bouquet? She could carry the other flower that the bridesmaids are not carrying or merely have a single long stem rose. Or a tussie mussie with just two of the flowers the bridesmaids carry.

A winter wedding I saw had the flower girl carrying some jingle bells or silver Christmas ornaments. Just like your centerpieces, you could use marbles or river rocks in a small vase as well. At my wedding rehearsal, I had the flower girl carry her lei (my rehearsal dinner was a luau).

Do you have any traditions going on? If it's an Irish wedding, she could carry something Irish. If it's African, she could carry the broom. If it's Jewish, she could carry the glass that you stomp. She could carry a platter with something borrowed, blue, old and new on it. She could carry two colors of sand if you guys are doing a sand ceremony (instead of the unity candle).

    Hope this helps!!!
Reply:The dress, if you can be flexible, just allow her to wear any dress that she likes. Maybe she already has one. This would be fine, since she is a flower girl and is not wearing the same thing as the bridesmaids.

The flowers, my only thoughts are the basket with flowers in it as you suggested, or throwing tiny tissue-paper flower cutouts (you can cut those out easily yourself with a flower-shaped paper punch).

What is the best way to involve a child into a blended family wedding?

I am marrying the man of my dreams in July. He was previously married once before and has a five (six when we marry) year old daughter from that marriage. I want to involve the child into our wedding in July to make it a special day for her as well. I don't want to sound at all selfish but I still want the day to be about us and not her but I think it is imporant for us to make her feel loved and involved as well. Not only am I marrying her dad but I am also in a way "marrying" the child by becoming part of her family. I will probably make her the flower girl but besides that are there any ideas that you have heard of where the child plays a special role in the wedding?

What is the best way to involve a child into a blended family wedding?
This is what we did - we had the officiant read this for us at the end of the ceremony before we did the kiss.

"A marriage is usually viewed as the joining together of a man and a woman. In reality marriage is much more then this. It is the joining together of two families to create a new family. The new family is enhanced, but the old family is not diminished.

As part of the family nature of this marriage NAME AND NAME wish to recognize and honor their children (Names), and their importance to the family relationship."

And then we gave each of my children a hug.

It was a very cool thing and the kids were very happy to be included. They were 9 and 11 at that time and we gave them the titles of Jr. Maid of honor and Jr. Best man. We did include them in the ceremony but also wanted it to be special for the 2 of us, since it was my hubby's first marraige he wanted a lot of focus on how we felt about each other. This worked out well and everyone was happy.

    Congrats to ya!
Reply:I was 5 when my dad remarried for the 1st time. I was a flower girl and felt like the most special, beautiful girl at the entire wedding. 5-year-olds are not difficult to please!

I was 16 when he re-married for the second time. This time I was a bridesmaid, and I felt honored.
Reply:My husband had a son who was 11 when we got married. We had him as a jr. best man and we also had something engraved for him and presented it to him before we exchanged rings. You could have the officient pronounce you husband, wife and family. It is important that you include the child and good luck.

Although there was no special role for my children, they felt included, even to the point that they considered it their wedding, too.

Your wedding is going to be an exciting day, not just for you, but for your future daughter as well. Excitement can be very stressful, you may not want to add more stress to such a young child.

    Best wishes and congratulations!
Reply:The day of your wedding symbolizes more than the bond between two people; it is the day a new family is created. If you or your fiance have children already, then your wedding day should mean the same thing to them, a day when they become part of something new.

The Family Medallion ceremony is a meaningful way to integrate your children or stepchildren into the wedding of their parents. Family medallions are a simple yet profound way to show them that your thoughts and commitment extend to them. The Family Medallion ceremony (or family medallion wedding service) gives a small token, a family medallion, to all of your children to represent that they are part of the new family and marriage.

The family medallions themselves have a symbol of three interlocking circles, representing the new commitment between you, your spouse, and your child. Like the wedding ring between husband and wife, the family medallions are a reminder to your child that they are a loved and integral part of your life and your family.

Reply:I'm sure you've heard of the Unity Candle Ceremony. There is also something called a "Sand Ceremony" based on the same principle and was created for exactly your type of situation. Instead of the couple lighting a candle, the couple and each of their respective children (in this case his daughter) all pour colored sand into a glass vase to represent the blending of the families together. This might be something you want to consider :)

Simple formula to make Calendula ointment to be used for dermatitis?

Need to use Marigold flowers to make an infusion using olive oil or maybe there is a simpler way as the flowers are the most important part of the formula. Apparently also have to use beeswax and cocoa butter.

Simple formula to make Calendula ointment to be used for dermatitis?
Email me and I'll send my recipe this evening, (heading out). I make several things with Calendula petals, including ointment. No Marigold, no olive oil. Yes beeswax or cocoa butter, but not both.

You'll need to start with some calendula petals. Something like two tablespoons or a 1/4 cup. I use a tea ball. Boil some water. Pour the water in a cup. Put in your petals, cover and let stand for 25-30 minutes. This will yield a strong infusion of calendula. You'll only need 4 tablespoons of it, but you can drink the rest. Actually, drinking it too, besides using it topically will help rid the body of toxins.

Supplies necessary: 4 tablespoons strong infusion. 4 oz (preferably dark) glass jar with screw top lid. A heavy bottom pan. A heat proof glass dish. a (small) metal whisk. 2 tablespoons of grated beeswax or cocoa butter. 4 tablespoons sunflower seed oil.

Put about an inch or so of water in your pan or pot. Heat that water to a gentle simmer. Your heat proof glass dish needs to sit in the pot, but above the water you're simmering. I use a small rectangular pyrex dish. It fits nicely. Before you start, make sure your two pieces fit well. You may have to try different combinations depending on what you have available in your household. It's kind of a double boiler concept. Place your calendula infusion in the heatproof dish along with your grated beeswax or cocoa butter. Both of these come in a hard form. My beeswax looks like a hexagonal bar of soap. Whisk your combination in the heatproof dish until your wax or cocoa butter has melted. Then, this takes a while. A few drops at a time, whisk in continuously, the oil. You can use safflower oil or sunflower oil. You had mentioned olive oil, but you will find it too thick. The thinner oils work much better. Keep on whisking till you've used all the oil. Then remove from heat and KEEP whisking, vigorously, until it begins to cool and thicken. Before it gets too thick pour it into your jar. Seal and refrigerate to set the mixture. My Herb book says it's only good for 4 weeks, but I just use it until it's gone. I do mostly keep it refrigerated though. You can use this on any skin irritation, but I use it sparingly on anything that's an open wound.

Let me know if you need anything else.

When you deadhead a petunia, does it help or hurt the plant to take the stem with it?

I'm not sure it's the stem, but the "green cup" that holds the flower. Sometimes mine don't come out so easily and I take the cup and a small part of the stem with it. The plant is amazingly healthy and full, so I'm not worried about killing it or anything. I just thought in doing that that I might be contributing to more lanky growth rather than more flowers. Thanks!

When you deadhead a petunia, does it help or hurt the plant to take the stem with it?
You must take the 'green cup' as this will develop into seeds and make your petunias lazy. Don't worry about taking the stem, they are pretty hardy.

Will flowers slow the growth of weeds?

I dug up a huge part of my yard to plant gardens. I plant things as I can but the weeds are uncontrollable. I am pulling them all of the time. Should I use weed killer? If I do when could I plant new plants? I already put down a thick layer of newspaper and mulch. I was hoping that flowers would take over so I didn't have as many weeds to pull.

Will flowers slow the growth of weeds?
No, just the opposite - weeds will slow the growth of flowers.

If you want to get rid of the weeds, you have to be patient for a couple of weeks before planting anything else.

First, you have to water the weeds and get them to grow before you plant any desireable plant. Spray them with a weed killer, which takes a good 24 hours to set to ensure it's effective (some say they start killing within 30 minutes, but give it a day).

They start watering your dead weeds. This will germinate any remaining weed seeds or revitalize any semi-dead weeds that weren't killed the first time. Give them a week or two to come back. Then, spray your weeds with weed killer again.

When the weeds are all dead (a coupla-few days), remove them (roots and all, if you can). Now you can put whatever plants you want without the weeds taking over. You may still get some popping up every now and again. But, they will be very manageable now.

Where is the stigma on spider-plant flowers?

I know it's there somewhere- I have successfully pollinated two flowers- but I just can't find it! I mean, it says in my bio textbook that there should be a large, sticky area on the top of the [can't remember whether it's pistol or stamen; it's the female part of the plant]. Is it microscopic?

Also- the plants I've pollinated have grown fleshy, three-lobed lumps. I'm assuming these are the fruits, but I wouldn't know.

Where is the stigma on spider-plant flowers?
I don't think there is anything of the sort associated with a spider plant. They have tiny white flowers that last for 24 hrs or less on long wiry stems coming off the main plant. The flowers are followed by baby plants. I have never heard of fleshy, three lobed lumps or fruits on a spider plant.

Could you possibly have a spider lily? That may develop into some sort of seed pod once pollinated. Just a thought, but I do not know much about pollinating them. Sorry.

Does anyone know how to revive a sad Vanda orchid?

I have a vanda orchid which when bought was beautiful. The flowers died and now the green part of the plant seems to be dying. This is one of those orchids that are grown with no compost - a kind of air orchid. Puzzled un-green fingers.

Does anyone know how to revive a sad Vanda orchid?
Vanda's thrive on high humidity levels and great light. If there are viable roots left you can put a bit of sphagnum moss around the roots in the basket and give it lots of humidity. Once you see new roots emerging you can give it higher light (even full sunlight is OK for most Vandas) If you can't provide high humidity try finding a large enough aquarium for a few weeks

You can also use rooting hormones and Superthrive to encourage new roots

Good news is that Vandas are fairly hardy and will most likely come back. Spray it often but make sure they are dry by night

Good luck if that doesn't help just send it to me :)

  • What type of jasmine is this? And is it toxic?

I live in Houston, and this is a picture or the plant in question http://www.flickr.com/photos/7372796@N07... . Any chance anyone knows what type of jasmine it is? This jasmine vine is on a nearby fence, and I want to know what type it is because some varieties are fatal to dogs (and I’m slightly concerned about my own dog, who is all too willing to eat random things off the ground). This website http://www.petfriendlyhouse.com/informat... lists some types of jasmine as non-toxic to dogs, while this website http://www.dcn.davis.ca.us/vme/DrSue/poi... lists all jasmine as potentially deadly. Does anyone know which jasmine plants are actually toxic and which are non-toxic? And which parts the toxic varieties are poisonous? (Leaves? Stems? Flowers? Seeds or berries? All parts?) Thanks in advance.

What type of jasmine is this? And is it toxic?
I don't think this is a jasmine in the botanical sense. It looks like a vine in the Apocynaceae family (in which case it will have milky sap) rather than in the Oleaceae family (which is where true jasmine belongs). Many Apocynaceae are poisonous (best example is the shrub Oleander) but very often do have white, sweetly scented jasmine-like flowers. Sorry that I can't give a more specific answer ...

My lower garden part looks bare. I like to put wildflowers in there. How do I go about it?
Clear your area out of debris and weeds, put down a bit of topsoil if you need it or at least till it well. Scatter the right seeds for your area and give it a light watering.

Honeysuckle can be problematic. It is spreads like wildfire and can choke off other stuff. Look into if you wish, but beware. Sages, butterfly bush, gaura, rudbeckia, poppies and cornflower all look beautiful and attract wildlife. They even make mixes of wildflowers for each area of the country. Wherever you live, you will find something suitable.

    http://aggie-horticulture.tamu.edu/Wilds...
Reply:What sort of climate do you have? Wildflower mixes will vary according to this. You can't plant New England wildflowers in Texas; too hot and dry most years. Below is a link to a site with a regional map.

Also note that many wildflowers in mixes are not truly native. They just grow easily, and so are included because they will self sow.

What are arguments for Creationism and an Intelligent Designer?

I read an article by Jay Gould against an intelligent designer, claiming that there were ineffective evolutionary producets, and that if there was an intelligent designer there wouldn't have been these ineffective parts of nature. He sited the fact that a Panda's Thumb is not actually a thumb, that and how flowers reproduce isn't effective either, though it's not particularly important to know that for my question.

I need to counter argue this point with a view on Creationism that would go against his view. Any ideas and suggestions?

What are arguments for Creationism and an Intelligent Designer?
    Let's see . . . I've got three.

How about this one. God punished Eve for eating from the tree of wisdom by giving her flaws that she did not have otherwise, like hunger, self-awareness (that she was naked), and the pain of childbirth. This illustrates that a creator may choose to introduce flaws for his own purpose, be it revenge, experimentation, or ???, and not necessarily to the advantage of the recipient.

Here's another possiblity. Stay with me on this. Using your example, perhaps the creator is not primarily interested in creating the "Panda", but in creating the panda's thumb. The Panda is simply the vessel to support the creation. It is human hubris to assume that the panda is the final creation, not the thumb. If this were true, the case for creationism is stronger than the case for evolution.

Finally, flaws inherently point to creationism. It is flaws, not perfection, that create individuality, innovation, and variation. Flaws are by definition squelched by evolution, yet they exist. This would argue that a creator intentionally introduced them to assure diversity and growth even in an relatively static environment. After all, most of mankinds growth of late is caused by the desire to exceed one's limitations (flaws), not to celebrate one's perfections.
Reply:The biggest fatuosity about ID is that they huff and puff about a "designer", and then say "but we're carefully not saying what it is". If you want to have a theory, you have to postulate some mechanism or agency. Which can then be evaluated for its logical appeal.
Reply:An intelligent designer may create things just because they are beautiful. Look at all the myriad extraordinary colours of tropical fish. What purpose does it serve? The fact that there are anomalies %26amp; things that don't make sense (like the platypus!) are the most convincing proof of God, and proof that it couldn't have been evolution or these weird things would have been weeded out or never would have existed.

God was an artist %26amp; had a sense of humour.

I'm an artist. I take a blank canvas %26amp; fill it with my vision. It may not be perfect but it is my expression, of love, of beauty. A canvas can not fill itself. It would sit there empty forever until someone decides to put paint on it. So God created the world.

Look at the beauty of flowers, pandas, trees, fish. Look at the wonder %26amp; variety of nature. What explanation, other than God, could you find for these extraordinary things? They are works of art. They are miraculous. They didn't happen by accident. Someone (some great being) put them here.
Reply:As Gould states it, the question is essentially this: if biological life really was designed by some sort of transcendent divine entity, why does it seem so haphazard and inelegant? Is God really so incompetent?

There is no good answer to this question. You can say that yes, God did design things in haphazard and roundabout ways, in order to test humankind's faith in Him. This is similar to supposing that God (or Satan) buried a bunch of dinosaur bones in the ground -- it puts you on the margins of society, well beyond the pale of rational thought, as it were. Or you can take a slighly different tack, and say that God's design really is the best possible one, and scientists like Gould are incapable of discerning the divine plan in its entirety. Perhaps pandas have a distinct sort of thumb from other thumb-having mammals because this keeps something else, something that we don't know about, in balance. This is more plausible, but it is still a weak case.

The standard Creationist approach to criticisms of this sort is to ignore them. Intelligent Design has only one decent argument: irreducible complexity. Most people choose to focus on that. Even evolutionary biologists working at the very cutting edge of science still can't perfectly explain some organs or sets of organs, like the immune system, in a way convincing enough to establish a consensus of their peers. Most people think that they eventually will -- but it's at least arguable.
Reply:YOu can't counter it. Creationism has no body of evidence with to argue with. What it does create is a very, very fallacious argument.

    "Who created the world"?

"God. The bible tells me so".

"And what evidence is there of God"?

    "The Bible, He wrote it".

    Fallacious argument.
Reply:First off, since the beginning the creation has been degrading ... (see Romans 8:20-21) Over many centuries mutations are making certain structures less %26amp; less effective.

However, floral reproduction is VERY effective, in that it uses insects %26amp; birds to spread pollen, to eat fruit to spread seeds etcetera. Moreover, UV spectrum from flower petal attract insects to petals and lure them by nectar, which the specially designed proboscis (nose suction device) of insects allows them to draw in nectar. There are clever trap devices like the Venus fly trap %26amp; such that contain amazing designs.

No, the meticulous structures of flowers speak of highly successful design, not ineffective parts of nature!

As for panda thumbs and teeth, they are specially adept for holding and consuming the leaves of bamboo.

See this quote from the Smithsonian National Zoological Park website:

"Giant pandas—and red pandas—have a special adaptation to help them grasp bamboo stems, or culms. An oversized wrist bone serves as thumb, which pandas use to hold bamboo against their palm so they can manipulate a stalk of bamboo and strip the branches and leaves with their teeth to create a bundle of leaves. Then, they use the pseudo thumb and forepaw to hold the bundle and eat from it in smaller bites. They are also able to manipulate the culm to strip the exterior to get at the palatable pith. "

    http://nationalzoo.si.edu/Animals/GiantP...

No, they structures are NOT ineffective; in fact they argue for a DESIGNER who intelligently placed the information into their DNA.
Reply:Just because he hasn't figured it out, doesn't mean that there isn't a purpose for it.

It amazes me that people still defend evolution. It was a reasonable theory in the ignorance of the Victorian era, but has since been shown to be HIGHLY implausible. You'll never persuade an evolution "true believer".

  • Advice about Geraniums please!?

Planted some Geraniums in march and they're really healthy and strong, but they seem to be taking ages to flower. How long do they normally take? Do they have to be in direct sunlight for the actual flower parts to grow? They're half covered at the moment in a greenhouse.

    Advice about Geraniums please!?
Remove shading or move them out of the greenhouse. They may also be too young to set bloom.

Geraniums require high light conditions but not a lot of direct heat from the sun to flower. They flower on new mature growth. Don't use a lot of fertilizer.

    See source for more info
Reply:Which type of geraniums? The hardy type or annual?

Having said that they will still be ' filling out ' as yet . Flowers are usually end of may beg June ( I'm north west England)

I have grown Geraniums in all aspects and they all flower especially the hardy type. The other type need More sun but you can deffo get a way with part shade...did that for years!! I found the white did better in shade than the other colours...after that pink and then red.
Reply:It is early for geraniums to flower. They need full sun and warmth. To keep them flowering make sure you remove any old flower head after they are done. Also, don't fertilize them. they will grow leaves at the expense of flowers.

Are there hummingbirds in New Jersey?

Moving to New Jersey soon, and for some reason I've become facinated with hummingbirds recently. Wondering if I get the feeder and plant the right flowers, if I could attract them? Not sure what parts of the country they're in... I know, random.

Are there hummingbirds in New Jersey?
Yes, ruby throated hummingbirds are in NJ. They will come to hummingbird feeders and love butterfly bush, fushias, hosta flowers, butterfly weed, bleeding hearts, lilac, and most annuals.

Reply:Ivy is an obvious choice. You can get variegated varieties. Mature plants have flowers and berries that provide food for the birds. Be warned though: it clings on to the wall or fence with small 'roots' and if you ever decide to get rid of it you'll find it very difficult to remove all traces of it from whatever it's been growing up.
Reply:there are some types of ivy that have whit %26amp; purple flowers in summer %26amp; stay green in winter
Reply:Star jasmine [Trachelospermum sp.] is an absolutely magnificent, woody, evergreen climber - and a bit unusual in the UK as well. It has extremely fragrant small white (unsurprisingly star-shaped) flowers in late summer. Depending on what website you read it is either hardy, or not (yes helpful I know), but I think unless you are in an area with severe frosts and you're after something a little different its well worth a punt!

Their only drawback is they have sticky white sap.

Reply:There are several varieties of evergreen clematis to choose from. One reliable variety is Clematis Armandii, which grows quickly, produces slightly fragrant, white flowers in Spring and stays evergreen. It is also easy to maintain as it requires little or no pruning, depending how much spread you require. It seems to grow in any soil, but does need some sun, so is not suitable for a shaded area.

I have one of these, scrambling over my fence and shed roof and reaching up into an oak tree. It is just starting to flower and looks gorgeous.

    Euonymus fortunei radicans (variegatus)

    Hydrangea petiolaris

Hedra (the ivies of which there are many beutifull specimens).

    Jasminum nudiflorum

    Passiflora edulis.

There are also many climbing roses which again are evergreen. But why don't you plant 2 or 3 together so you can have flowers almost all year round. Try a nice climbing rose, Rosa climbing iceberg and Clematis ernest markham and then for the winter you could include Jasminum nudiflorum which has lovely cheerfull yellow flowers through out the winter.

How to get up all the roots from a sweet autumn clematis?

I had planted it deep and it overgrew the spot so tried to dig it up, but the root system spread deep and wide and part of it is near the wiring for my t.v. cable. Any ideas on how to get it all out of my flower bed because the least bit left will start a whole new plant in short time. Also don't want to cut the cable.

How to get up all the roots from a sweet autumn clematis?
If the roots are far enough away from the cable that you can dig the soil out, dig deep enough to get to the root ball, place a rock bar under the ball and leverage it out. Any remaining trailers, you should be able to pull by hand by following them to their ends.

Or an excavator but you'll still have to follow the trailers.

  • Where can I find innovative interactive dog toys for the smart hyperactive dog?

Our dog is an australian and half german? (got her from the shelter). She's extremely hyperactive and does chew through the lesser toys. Loves the kongs, ropes, bones, and this super XL plush jack toy. We keep around 10 or so toys out and play with her several times a day, she's goes nuts in a large space full of wild vegetation / hideaways, . but alas, not enough! She still tends to have those tear up the flower bed moments! eek and still loves to bark at the neighbors, who look down on part of our property, their voices perhaps become distracting. Toy suggestions please?

Would love to get her a maze she can crawl through or a tetherball stand for dogs? (does this exist), or other unique extremely interactive toys besides the basic ones at your local petsmart.

Where can I find innovative interactive dog toys for the smart hyperactive dog?
You may want to enroll her in some type of agility class - she will burn lots of energy (physical and mental). Also, you need to rotate her toys - don't give her all 10 all the time, just 2 or 3 max and then put those away and give her 2 different ones the next day, etc. Buster cube is a good one to try.
Reply:Busy Buddy and Buster Cube toys are great, food-stuffable toys that will keep your dog busy for hours. When I leave my guy alone, I throw one or two in his crate and it keeps him from getting too worked up about being alone. Kong also makes toys like these that are very durable and good for a heavy chewer.

I think that perhaps an obedience or agility class might help with any extra nervous energy or tension. Shepards are natural working dogs, so it might help her if she can feel useful. Teaching a dog to "speak" and "quiet" on command may also help with the barking.
    Reply:petco or premium pet products
Reply:Make sure she has plenty of exericise (at least an hour a day) and mental stimulation. You need to work her daily and teach her new things to keep her mind occupied (australian shepherds are incredibly bright). Sounds like she'd be great for agility or flyball.

Once you have that covered, I would never have survived my border collies adolesence without the tricky treat ball. It's a ball you put dog food into and they roll it around to get the food out. It will keep her occupied for at least half an hour.

The reason she tears up the flower bed and barks is because she's a dog, and she's bored and lonely. Put a fence around the flower bed, a citronella or shock collar will discourage barking, but really she should be inside with you. Is she outside all the time? that could be the root of your problem. Dogs need to be with their pack.
Reply:PetSmart actually recently started selling the tunnels they use in competitions (the ones where the dog runs through it) and a bunch of other things like that (I saw the tunnel in the weekly coupons PetSmart emails me). Your dog would probably love it. My dogs love water so I got a spinkler that attaches to the hose and rotates- they will run through it for hours.
Reply:There are toys that the dog has to roll and then a treat falls out, also you can put peanut butter inside the Kong's (takes quite awhile to lick out),try training her to skateboard like the little English Bulldog on the news does! Put out a small kiddie pool with some water in it and put a couple rubber rings under the water to try to get. These are all safe, self entertaining toys and activities. What can I plant under a deciduous tree?

I have a flower bed that has three dogwood trees. I don't want to and can't move the trees. In the winter when there are no leaves the bed receives full sun but in the spring and summer it is shaded under the branches. I trimmed the branches back, cut off some of them, but it really didn't change the amount of sun filtered in. So my question is (now that you have way too much information) what can I plant that will do ok in full sun and in part shade? Will part sun/shade plants do ok? I really want to plant daylilies, will they make it? I live in zone 7. Thanks for your help!

What can I plant under a deciduous tree?
I suggest hostas, ferns, and for some summer color, annual impatiens.

    Daylilies generally like full sun.

    Witchhazel....

    Azalea....

    Phygelius capensis(Cape Fuschia)

    Crocosmia

If you do go with Day Lillies try pairing/mixing them with Bearded Irises...Shasta Daisies...Black eyed Susans....Agapathus...Crocosmia....damn, the list is never ending.

    Good Luck!
    Reply:You can plant pansies.

you will have to plant them twice a year but they will work - during the spring and summer you can plant any type of pansie you want, they will be fine in the partial shade.

During the winter, you can plany cold hardy pansies - they have been bred to survive the winter and do not mind full sun - I have seen them survive 6 inches of snow - they do well in Pennsylvania winters.

During the summer, if you want to plant something else, you can try Hostas which do well in shade. Toad lillies will do well also.

day lillies prefer more sun then less, but can do well in partial shade - most time they are listed as a partial shade/full sun plant

How do I cut back creeping phlox after flowering?

I am new to planting and everything says to cut back the foliage on creeping phlox after flowering to help the phlox grow better and bloom more, Can someone explain to me what part to cut and how much? Thanks!

How do I cut back creeping phlox after flowering?
You usually cut back the dead leaves to new growth. You can use shears just to trim the tops off. If the growth looks good just cut the old dead flower heads.
Reply:Phlox is like an expanding mat. It will spread out and the edges will eventually root in place. You can simply pick up the outside edges and trim them back, pulling up any roots if it exists. Phlox is very invasive and will take over an area killing anything else growing there so you will have to control it through trimming. In early/late summer just trim the edges back to the place where you want it to 'be' next year and it will be fine.

In my opinion cutting is NOT needed to grow better or bloom more due to the prolific invasiveness of this plant.

What in the dickens are they called?

In Maryland, what are the trees that have purple trumpet-like flowers %26amp; the leaves get big like elephant ears?
I agree with the above, Paulownia tree. Actually Paulownia is the genus name for many different species found around the work, but mostly China and other Asian countries.

The genus was names in honor of Queen Anna Pavlovna of The Netherlands (1795–1865), daughter of Tsar Paul I of Russia.

Paulownia fortunei is a fast-growing tree that is grown commercially for the production of hardwood timber, but in this country it is mainly an ornamental growing multiple feet a year.

Paulownia tomentosa is listed as an invasive species in the southeastern United States, having been introduced there as an ornamental tree for its decorative flowers.

It is important to know what Paulownia you are planting. While bother are fast growing, the P. tomentosa can escape cultivation in milder areas, that is it becomes a weed displacing native plants.

Here's a website you might enjoy.

The backs of the leaves are sometimes kind of sticky. They get HUGE and grow quick.

My 3 dogs have destructive pee!, any suggestions for what to do with my yard?

I live in the Inland Empire of Southern California and it gets massively hot in the summer, and I HATE to have to use so much water for grass, which my dogs pee on and kill anyway. Some parts of my yard have rock walkways (which they avoid and pee on my flowers instead) and wood chip paths which is too hard to clean their poo out of and they drag half of it in the house. I was looking at fake grass, but the only kind that can stand up to dog pee is WAY too expensive for me. And I absolutely will not put down concrete.

I have a bunch of empty dirt areas which is driving me crazy.

Any creative, relatively simple, suggestions as to what I can put down to have a "pee proof" yard?

My 3 dogs have destructive pee!, any suggestions for what to do with my yard?
I had the same problem with my 2 dogs! I had bare spots everywhere and it looked horrible. I tried the urine nuetrilizer and it didnt work. I watered and that was a waste of water and time. I went to the local hardware store and bought high traffic-full sun grass seed. I watered the area so the seed wouldnt fly and then raked it in with a garden hoe. I used the whole bag of seed. then I put straw on top of it to protect it a little from the dogs. They still peed on it but it grew within a couple days I had grass and its been 2 months now and its still green! I dont know if the seed just adjusted the the urine saturated soil or what but it worked. I think that the key to getting it started was the straw it held in the moisture. It was $6.00 a bundle and the hardware store. Good Luck!
Reply:Go to a garden center and buy garden gypsum. Gypsum chemically offsets the salts in pet urine. Apply the gypsum to the grass every month and water normally.

This WILL help keep your grass from being burnt by their urine.

You can also sprinkle the gyp right on the spots where they pee.

Having pets and a perfect yard are not an easy mix. It takes a lot of work to make a lawn look good without pets, let alone having to deal with their poop and pee and all of the noxious chemistry it carries.
Reply:I don't know if you walk them or just let them out. If you just let them out then you should buy the product that neutralizes their urine. However, if you go out with them then you should take a big bottle of water and pour it on the spot right after they urinate that will prevent the yellow burnt-out spots in the grass.
Reply:Try a larger pet store such as Petsmart. They have something that you add to the pets food that neutralizes urine.
Reply:How about focusing on your dogs first? Mix their dry food with a little bit of water--their urine will become more dilute and will not wreak so much havoc on your yard.
Reply:the small river pebbles are suppose to be good for a dogs feet, you may want to try that in the areas that don't have grass.

the amonia in their urine is what is killing the grass. I have the same problem. they don't like the cement but they have to stay on that most of the time. I have fenced in my grass and flower area so they cannot ruin either.

once in a while I let them in and they get such enjoyment they run everywhere and rub in the grass.

but letting them in there too much leaves me with big brown dead patches in my grass.

why not try some of the ground cover that grows or some of the moss, you don't even have to cut the moss as it only grows so long anyway.

Hi - I got 75 Rose of Sharons from Burgess for a hedge - http://www.eburgess.com/index.asp They are a really cheap / low cost company. They sell both 2' and 4' plants. I got the small ones and within 2 years they were full size (bigger than me). I wouldn't worry about buying big plants - the transplant shock is harder on them. I bought small $5 evergreens from home depot while my neighbor brough in huge $75 ones. 3 years later mine grew to his size and his are virtually the same size.

Reply:Shipping would be a bugger! Your best bet is to find your local major nursery....or contact a landscape designer or contractor.......and see what is available in a 10 or 15 gallon size. Remember the wholesaler will also be paying the freight and pass it on to you. How wonderful if you live where plants are still grown locally. You could find a nursery that had a balled and burlaped plant for you. Not real common anymore.

Actually the time advantage isn't as great as you imagine. Bigger plants have much bigger roots........more of which are cut for transplanting (ball and burlap) or may have begun circling inside the container (not good). So the plant will spend extra seasons getting new roots reestablished before growth can resume. At least with threes, there's very little advantage to buying a higher caliper (tree diameter) tree than one smaller as the smaller will often reestablish faster than the larger due to less root loss.

You are right, a one-three gallon shrub is tiny. By 5 they are getting size and once in awhile you'll fine a 7. Beyond that they are rare.......and heavy......think 50+ lbs. You'd have the best luck getting the largest you can find locally and providing ideal planting location and care towards after planting.

How can I prevent bugs from getting in my garden?

I have a garden with assorted plants, like flowers and herbs and veggies. The problem is that I am also planting strawberries, but ants or some kind of bug can bite parts of it. Are there any ways in which I can prevent this?

How can I prevent bugs from getting in my garden?
There are too many good bugs to want to get rid of them all. Those 'bite marks' are probably slugs. Keep the ground around your berries free of dead vegetation like leaves and such. It makes great hiding places for slugs. Sprinkle some lime on the ground around the strawberries. If you don't have lime, crushed egg shells work too. I've heard they don't like to cross over copper wire, so you could use old wiring stripped of its plastic and make little rings around each plant. You can also catch %26amp; drown the slugs by leaving a jar lid filled with beer and half burried into the soil so they can easily climb in. Empty the jar in the morning and refill before night time. They are noctunal ( active at night).

To keep the bug population under control, make your garden bird friendly and place a few feeders and water baths around. They love dining on slugs %26amp; bugs!
Reply:A natural way is to buy and release lady bugs.

Don't worry about a few bugs, they have to eat too!

Reply:bug-b-gon max!!! wait 2 to 3 weeks before harvesting the veggies!
Reply:Spray the plants with a solution made of water and dish soap. The soap will cover the breathing holes on the bugs and smother them. It works great and is non-toxic. I've also mixed Tobasco sauce, garlic juice and cooking oil in, that repels birds and rabbits. It will also make your yard smell like a salad. Just add a little bit of each to a couple of gallons of water in a flood sprayer and soak down the leaves once a week or so.

  • Where can I find a database of hard to find antique furniture?

I need information on a chair. It is a barrel type chair with a swivel bottom but the swivel part isn't really visible. It had nail head details and a brass woman holding a giant fish on it. It also has some brass or bronze flower detail. Any help is appreciated!

Where can I find a database of hard to find antique furniture?
    Dating chairs

Before the 19th century, chair seat frames were strengthened with glued corner braces. After c.1840 shaped and screwed triangular brackets were used.

    Hope this helps,

    Cheers!
Reply:This kind of thing is far more likely to be found in a book showing hundreds of pictures of antiques at your library or take some pictures and go to or e-mail a museum that has a good furniture collection.

You might also use advanced search on Google Images to remove unrelated returns (like omit rifle to avoid barrel returns there.) And look at all the images.
Reply:Dude is right, you will have more luck in a library.

There are many of the larger auction houses, like Christie's, Sotheby's and Hindemann Auction houses that offer appraisals on line. It involves sending pics, measurements, etc. but they can tell you all about who made it, when it was made, etc. especially if you cannot find the info any other way.
