My 3 dogs have destructive pee!, any suggestions for what to do with my yard?

I live in the Inland Empire of Southern California and it gets massively hot in the summer, and I HATE to have to use so much water for grass, which my dogs pee on and kill anyway. Some parts of my yard have rock walkways (which they avoid and pee on my flowers instead) and wood chip paths which is too hard to clean their poo out of and they drag half of it in the house. I was looking at fake grass, but the only kind that can stand up to dog pee is WAY too expensive for me. And I absolutely will not put down concrete.

I have a bunch of empty dirt areas which is driving me crazy.

Any creative, relatively simple, suggestions as to what I can put down to have a "pee proof" yard?

I had the same problem with my 2 dogs! I had bare spots everywhere and it looked horrible. I tried the urine nuetrilizer and it didnt work. I watered and that was a waste of water and time. I went to the local hardware store and bought high traffic-full sun grass seed. I watered the area so the seed wouldnt fly and then raked it in with a garden hoe. I used the whole bag of seed. then I put straw on top of it to protect it a little from the dogs. They still peed on it but it grew within a couple days I had grass and its been 2 months now and its still green! I dont know if the seed just adjusted the the urine saturated soil or what but it worked. I think that the key to getting it started was the straw it held in the moisture. It was $6.00 a bundle and the hardware store. Good Luck!
Reply:Go to a garden center and buy garden gypsum. Gypsum chemically offsets the salts in pet urine. Apply the gypsum to the grass every month and water normally.



This WILL help keep your grass from being burnt by their urine.



You can also sprinkle the gyp right on the spots where they pee.



Having pets and a perfect yard are not an easy mix. It takes a lot of work to make a lawn look good without pets, let alone having to deal with their poop and pee and all of the noxious chemistry it carries.
Reply:I don't know if you walk them or just let them out. If you just let them out then you should buy the product that neutralizes their urine. However, if you go out with them then you should take a big bottle of water and pour it on the spot right after they urinate that will prevent the yellow burnt-out spots in the grass.
Reply:Try a larger pet store such as Petsmart. They have something that you add to the pets food that neutralizes urine.
Reply:How about focusing on your dogs first? Mix their dry food with a little bit of water--their urine will become more dilute and will not wreak so much havoc on your yard.
Reply:the small river pebbles are suppose to be good for a dogs feet, you may want to try that in the areas that don't have grass.



the amonia in their urine is what is killing the grass. I have the same problem. they don't like the cement but they have to stay on that most of the time. I have fenced in my grass and flower area so they cannot ruin either.



once in a while I let them in and they get such enjoyment they run everywhere and rub in the grass.



but letting them in there too much leaves me with big brown dead patches in my grass.



why not try some of the ground cover that grows or some of the moss, you don't even have to cut the moss as it only grows so long anyway.
